White cabbage "Brunswick" (Brassica oleracea var. capitata)
Description:
Brunswick is a classic white cabbage variety that has been popular for generations. This variety produces large, dense heads of cabbage that weigh between 2-4 kg and have crunchy, sweet foliage. Cabbage is particularly resistant to cold and is therefore perfect for late autumn and winter cultivation. Brunswick is ideal for making sauerkraut, cabbage stews or using fresh in salads and wraps. Its high yield and long shelf life make it a favorite among growers.
Packaging Information:
One package contains 2 g of seeds, which corresponds to approximately 480 seeds.
Cultivation characteristics:
- Plant type: Annual
- Height: About 30–50 cm
- Fruit size: Cabbage heads of 2–4 kg
- Harvest period: September – November
Cultivation tips:
-
Sowing:
- Sow the seeds indoors in March–April, about 1 cm deep in the soil.
- Keep the soil evenly moist and place in a bright and cool place (15–18°C).
-
Retraining:
- When the plants have developed 2-4 leaves, replant in individual pots or directly sow outdoors when the risk of frost is over.
-
Deployment:
- Plant out in late May or early June in a sunny location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil.
- Use a plant spacing of 50 x 50 cm to give each plant enough space.
-
Care:
- Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods, to promote good growth.
- Cover the soil with organic material such as straw or compost to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
- Fertilize with nitrogen-rich nutrients during the growing season to support large and healthy cabbage heads.
-
Harvest:
- Harvest the heads of cabbage when they are firm and have reached the desired size. Cabbage can remain in the ground for some time after it is ripe for harvest, making it flexible to pick.
Advantages of Brunswick:
- Cold hardy: Excellent for autumn and winter cultivation.
- High yield: Produces large, nutritious heads of cabbage.
- Versatility: Perfect for both fresh consumption and canning.
- Long shelf life: Suitable for long-term storage after harvest.
