Cultivation description: Celery root – Albin
Description:
Celery root Albin is an early, robust variety known for its large, round and white root nodules. This versatile vegetable is used both fresh and cooked and provides a mild, nutty flavor. Albin is particularly popular for its good ability to be stored over the winter, retaining its flavor and texture. It is perfect for soups, gratins or as a tasty addition to various dishes.
Packaging Information:
One package contains 0.5 grams of seeds, which corresponds to approximately 2500 seeds.
Sowing and planting:
- Sowing depth: 1–2 cm
- Pre-cultivation indoors: January – March
- Sowing time outdoors: April – May (when the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost is over)
- Planting out plants: May – June (the plants should have grown during the pre-cultivation)
- Plant distance: 30 x 30 cm
Care:
Celery root Albin thrives in nutritious, well-drained and moist soil. Prepare the soil by mixing in plenty of compost or organic matter. Watering is important to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid it becoming waterlogged.
Celery root needs a long growing season, so it's good to pre-cultivate indoors to give the plants a head start. During the growing season, you can also fertilize with a balanced, organic fertilizer to encourage root tuber growth.
Harvest time:
September – November, depending on sowing time. Celery root can be harvested when the tubers have reached the desired size. For longer storage, harvest after the first night of frost.
Storage:
Celery root can be stored well throughout the winter if it is stored in a cool, dark and moist place, for example in sand or peat. This allows it to be used long after harvest.
Tip:
- Hardy plant: Celery root is relatively hardy and can handle both heat and cold, making it ideal for both summer and winter growing.
- Protection from pests: Keep an eye on plant damage from insects and cabbage worms, especially during the first growing phase. Use fiber cloth or netting to protect the plants.
