Strawberry plant 'Rumba' – bareroot
'Rumba' is an early strawberry variety that produces large, deep red, glossy berries with a sweet, aromatic flavour. It produces a consistent harvest and is hardy, making it ideal for both home gardens and larger farms. It is excellent for fresh consumption, jamming and baking.
These seedlings are bare-rooted, meaning they arrive with only roots and few or no leaves. They should be planted immediately upon receipt to get off to a good start.
Delivery takes place from week 12.
Planting
-
Earth and place
- Location : 'Rumba' thrives best in a sunny location with good air circulation.
- Soil : Prefers well-drained, loamy soil with a pH of 5.5–6.5. Amend the soil with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
-
Planting distance
- Plant with 30–35 cm between plants and 60–70 cm between rows to give them space to develop.
-
Planting time
- Plant in early spring or fall. Fall planting gives you a head start for the upcoming growing season.
-
Planting technique
- Dig a hole that will accommodate the entire root system without bending the roots.
- Place the plant so that the growing point (heart) is level with the soil surface.
Care
-
Watering
- Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods and during flowering and fruiting. Do not overwater, as this can cause rot.
-
Fertilization
- Use a balanced fertilizer when planting and supplement with a potassium-rich fertilizer during fruit set.
-
Weed control
- Clear weeds around the plants to reduce competition for nutrients and water. Mulch, such as straw, helps keep weeds down and the berries clean.
-
Protection and maintenance
- Use netting or bird protection to protect the berries from birds.
- If there is a risk of frost during flowering, cover the plants with non-woven fabric.
-
Harvest
- Pick the berries when they are fully ripe and have a deep, even red color. 'Rumba' is hardy and has a good shelf life, making it easy to store for a short time after harvest.
-
Plant rejuvenation
- After 3–4 years, the plants can be replaced to ensure continued high yields.
Tips for successful cultivation
- 'Rumba' is a hardy variety, but regular watering and nutrition are the key to a bountiful harvest.
- Plant in raised beds for better drainage and to minimize the risk of soil-borne rot.
- Rotate the growing location every three years to avoid a build-up of diseases in the soil.
With its early harvest and delicious taste, 'Rumba' is a reliable favorite for strawberry growing!
