Kankong – Water spinach

Latin name: Ipomoea aquatica

Kankong, also known as water spinach, is a fast-growing and heat-loving leafy vegetable that is very popular in Asian cuisine. The leaves and tender stems are used in stir-fries, soups and salads – the taste is reminiscent of spinach but with a milder tone.

Cultivation advice:

  • Sowing time: Indoors from March or outdoors when the soil is warm (above 20 °C)

  • Sowing depth: 1 cm

  • Row spacing: 25–30 cm

  • Plant distance: 20 cm

  • Location: Sunny, warm and humid – preferably in a pot or bed with good water access

  • Harvest: 30–40 days after sowing. Harvest top shoots and leaves continuously.

Perfect for warm greenhouses, conservatories or protected growing areas during the summer. Can be harvested several times during the season.
