Watermelon 'Charleston Grey' (Citrullus lanatus)

Description:
Charleston Gray is a classic, large and tasty watermelon with a light grey-green skin color and red, juicy fruit inside. It is known for its sweet, crunchy and meaty texture. The fruits usually weigh between 7-12 kg and have a low seed content, making them ideal both for raw consumption and for making juice or smoothies. This variety thrives in hot climates and is very popular for its reliable yield and great taste.

Packaging Information:
One package contains 1 g of seeds, which corresponds to 12 seeds. (+/- 20%)

Cultivation characteristics:

  • Plant type: Annual, climbing and spreading
  • Height: The plant can spread to a large area, up to 2-3 meters
  • Need to be pruned: No, but it is good to cut off dead or weak leaves to give the plant more energy for fruit development
  • Fruit size: 7–12 kg per fruit
  • Harvest period: July – August (depending on the climate of the growing area)

Cultivation tips:

  1. Sowing:

    • Sow the seeds indoors in March–May, about 2–3 cm deep in seed soil.
    • Keep the soil moist and place the seed in a warm area (24–28°C).
    • Wait until the plants have developed 2-3 leaves before planting them out.
  2. Retraining:

    • Once the plants have developed some true leaves, repot them into larger pots if needed to give them more room.
  3. Deployment:

    • Plant out when the risk of frost is over, usually in mid-May or June, in a sunny location with a plant spacing of 1-1.5 meters.
    • Watermelons need a lot of space to spread, so give them plenty of space in the garden or growing bed.
    • For best results, grow them in well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter.
  4. Care:

    • Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to mold or fruit cracking.
    • Fertilize regularly, especially when the plants begin to flower and the fruits begin to set.
    • If you grow in a greenhouse or in an area with a long growing season, you can expect larger fruits.
    • To promote good fruit development, you can support the larger fruits with netting or pots to keep them off the soil and prevent mold.
  5. Harvest:

    • Harvest when the fruits have become large, heavy and the sound when tapped is hollow. Watermelons do not ripen after harvest, so it is important that they are fully ripe when picked.

Advantages of Charleston Grey:

  • Big and sweet fruit: The big, juicy fruit is perfect for hot summer days.
  • Low seed content: Fewer seeds mean more edible flesh per fruit.
  • Traditional variety: One of the most popular watermelons in the United States and the world for its taste and durability.
  • High Yield: Produces a large number of fruits when grown under the right conditions.
